Pink Sapphire or Ruby? Where Gem Labs Draw the Line Between the Two

A pink sapphire and a ruby are the same mineral: corundum coloured by chromium. Yet the word printed on the certificate can change the price of an otherwise identical stone by a factor of two or more. This article explains how gemmological laboratories actually decide where pink sapphire ends and ruby begins, why the labs disagree with each other, and what that means when you are comparing two stones side by side.

One Mineral, Two Names

Corundum is aluminium oxide. In its pure form it is colourless. Add trace chromium and it turns pink to red; add iron and titanium instead and it turns blue. Every ruby is a chromium-coloured corundum, and so is every pink sapphire. There is no structural, chemical, or optical dividing line between them — only a difference in how much chromium is present and, consequently, how saturated the colour appears.

This makes the ruby/pink sapphire boundary unlike most gemmological distinctions. Separating sapphire from spinel, or natural from synthetic, is a question of fact that a laboratory can settle with instruments. Separating pink from red is a question of judgement about a continuum, and reasonable gemmologists working to different house standards land in different places.

How Laboratories Make the Call

Labs describe colour using three variables: hue (the position on the colour wheel), tone (light to dark), and saturation (the intensity of the colour). Hue alone does not settle the question, because a pale stone and a vivid stone can share the same red hue. Tone and saturation do most of the work.

In broad terms, a stone with a red to slightly purplish-red hue and medium tone with strong saturation will be called ruby. The same hue at light tone and weak saturation will be called pink sapphire. The grey zone sits in the middle — stones of light-to-medium tone with moderate saturation, often described in the trade as "hot pink" or "pinkish red." These are the stones that generate the disagreements.

The practical consequences are real. GRS has historically been more willing to call a saturated pink stone a ruby than GIA, which applies a comparatively conservative threshold. Neither is wrong; they are applying different in-house masterstone sets. It is entirely normal for a single stone to return "pink sapphire" from one laboratory and "ruby" from another, which is why a serious buyer looks at the stone and the colour description, not just the headline name.

Why Origin and Fluorescence Complicate It Further

Chromium does two things at once: it produces red colour and it produces red fluorescence. Stones from low-iron deposits such as Burma and Mozambique fluoresce strongly, because there is little iron to quench the effect. That fluorescence adds a visible glow in daylight, pushing the apparent saturation upward and making borderline stones read as more red than their chemistry alone would suggest.

Iron-rich material — much Thai and Cambodian corundum, for example — behaves the opposite way. Iron suppresses fluorescence and adds a darker, slightly garnet-like cast. A Thai stone and a Mozambique stone with the same chromium content can therefore sit on opposite sides of the line. This is one of several reasons origin appears on high-value certificates alongside the colour call.

What This Means for Buyers

The pricing gap across the boundary is steep and largely driven by the name rather than by any visible difference. Two stones that look nearly identical in the hand can be separated by a large premium simply because one certificate says ruby. That gap creates both a trap and an opportunity.

The trap is paying a ruby premium for a stone that only just cleared a permissive lab's threshold. The opportunity is the reverse: a top-end pink sapphire that narrowly missed the ruby call offers most of the visual impact at a considerably lower price per carat. Buyers who care about how a stone looks rather than what it is called often find the best value sitting just under the line.

  • Judge the stone in daylight before you read the certificate, not after
  • Note which laboratory issued the report and how it words the colour description
  • Ask whether the stone was submitted to more than one lab, and what each returned
  • Compare price per carat against genuinely similar-looking stones on both sides of the boundary
