Heated vs Unheated Sapphire: What's the Difference and Why It Matters

Posted by Thai Gems on

When you start shopping for loose sapphires, you’ll quickly encounter two categories that can make a significant difference to price and value: heated and unheated. Understanding the distinction is essential for any buyer — whether you’re a jeweler sourcing stones, a collector investing in fine gems, or someone shopping for an engagement ring.

What Is a Heated Sapphire?

Heat treatment is a permanent, stable process in which a sapphire is subjected to very high temperatures — typically between 1,600°C and 1,800°C — to improve its color and clarity. The process dissolves or reduces unwanted inclusions, deepens pale colors, and corrects undesirable hues.

Heat treatment has been used in the gemstone trade for centuries. Today, the vast majority of sapphires sold globally — estimated at 95% or more — have been heat treated. It is the industry standard, fully accepted by all major gemological laboratories including GIA, GRS, and Gübelin, and it carries no stigma in the trade.

Importantly, heat treatment is permanent. It does not wear off, fade over time, or require any ongoing care. A heated sapphire will hold its color for generations, just like an unheated stone.

What Is an Unheated Sapphire?

An unheated sapphire is one that has received no heat treatment or enhancement of any kind. Its color and clarity are entirely natural — exactly as the stone formed in the earth over millions of years.

Unheated sapphires are significantly rarer. Finding a stone with excellent natural color and clarity without any treatment requires extraordinary luck in sourcing. For this reason, fine unheated sapphires command a substantial premium in the market.

Unheated status is confirmed by independent gemological laboratories. GRS, GIA, and Gübelin all issue certificates that explicitly state “no indications of heating” when testing confirms the stone is untreated.

How Much More Do Unheated Sapphires Cost?

The price premium for unheated status varies significantly by quality, but as a general guide:

  • Fine blue sapphires: Unheated stones typically sell for 2–4x the price of comparable heated stones
  • Padparadscha sapphires: Unheated padparadscha can command 3–5x premiums
  • Color change sapphires: Virtually all are unheated; the premium is built into the base price
  • Commercial grade stones: The premium is lower — often 30–50% — as the rarity factor matters less at this quality level

At Thai Gems, all heated and unheated stones are clearly disclosed on every listing. We never misrepresent treatment status.

Which Is Better — Heated or Unheated?

The answer depends entirely on your priorities.

Choose heated sapphires if:

  • You want the best color and clarity for your budget
  • You’re making jewelry where visual impact matters most
  • You’re a jeweler or manufacturer sourcing production stones
  • You want a beautiful stone at a fair, accessible price

Choose unheated sapphires if:

  • You’re buying as an investment or for a collection
  • Provenance and natural origin are important to you
  • You want a certified “no heat” stone for a high-value commission
  • You’re purchasing a significant stone (2 carats+) where rarity adds long-term value

How Can You Tell If a Sapphire Has Been Heated?

Visually, it is impossible to tell whether a sapphire has been heated. The only reliable way to confirm unheated status is through a certificate from a reputable gemological laboratory. GRS and GIA are the gold standards for sapphire certification.

Reputable dealers will always disclose treatment status and provide certification on higher-value stones. If a seller cannot confirm whether a stone has been heated, walk away.
